We all hate it–the insurance-based healthcare system is draining our businesses of capital without much to show for it. in the past 4 years, rates in PA for most companies have more than doubled, yet coverage of our people has declined.
Business leaders need to take action–now. We can’t wait for some new national scheme when we’re losing profits, people, and competitive edge to global businesses today.
Great news: there’s a Pennsylvania proposal that will hold our costs to 10% of payroll, plus 3% of individual income, plus eliminate 50% of worker’s compensation. If your business is like mine where we care for our people with comprehensive coverage, your rates are in the range of 20% to 30% of payroll.
The bill? House Bill 1660 and Senate Bill 400, The Family & Business Healthcare Security Act.
- We believe a healthy workforce is a productive and reliable workforce.
- We believe the health insurance system is broken, bureaucratic, expensive, and unsustainable.
- We believe the current system forces us to participate in costly bureaucracies.
- We believe the current system gives us no predictability for budgeting.
- We believe healthcare costs should be lowered and contained.
- We believe in ending defensive medical practices by doctors trying to avoid lawsuits, and that this will reduce unnecessary expensive tests and over-prescription of care.
- We believe in personal responsibility, along with preventive healthcare and nutrition as keys to a healthy workforce.
- We believe that government isn’t the answer to everything.
- We also believe that by pooling our money together, that we can cover everyone in the state regardless of employment and lower costs for all businesses that currently cover their people.
- We believe, even if reluctantly, that this pool must be mandated by the state, so that every business pays its fair share and that we get the full force of business to lower healthcare costs.
- We believe that once we have this state pool of business healthcare funds, that cost of healthcare for business will drop as much as 70% for some.
- We know that the city of Philadelphia would have saved $300 million in healthcare costs under the proposed system, which could have been returned to taxpayers.
